Student using a laptop to apply for StudentAid BC in the new SIMS system

Short answer

Short answer: StudentAid BC launched a new application system called SIMS on June 23, 2026. Full-time students now need a BC Services Card account to apply. The old Student Dashboard is closed for new applications. There is no universal July 31 funding deadline — the real deadline depends on your study period.

How to apply in SIMS: 6 steps

1

Set up your BC Services Card

Download the BC Services Card App and complete identity verification. This digital ID is now required to log in to the new StudentAid BC system.

2

Create your SIMS account

Starting June 23, 2026, all new full-time StudentAid BC applications use SIMS (Student Information Management System). Choose Full-Time Student and create a personal account.

3

Choose your designated school and program

Search for your school in the designated school list. Your specific program must also be eligible, and the school must confirm your enrollment after you apply.

4

Complete the correct Appendix

If your parents' information is required, fill out Appendix 1. If you have a spouse, fill out Appendix 2. These forms collect household income and other details used in the assessment.

5

Authorize CRA income verification

You must consent to Canada Revenue Agency verifying income for the relevant tax year. Without this consent, your application will not be processed.

6

Wait for your Notice of Assessment

StudentAid BC typically issues a Notice of Assessment within 4–6 weeks. It will show the grants you do not repay and the loans you may choose to accept.

Deadlines: what is actually true

There is no universal July 31 deadline

StudentAid BC's final deadline is normally six weeks before your study period ends. Some schools set their own deadlines for enrollment deposits, but those are not the same as StudentAid BC's funding deadline.

Apply at least six weeks before classes start

Submitting early gives StudentAid BC time to assess your file and lets the school confirm enrollment before tuition is due.

Old Dashboard applications closed June 19, 2026

Applications started in the old Student Dashboard but not submitted by 3 p.m. on June 19, 2026, were cancelled and must be restarted in SIMS.

Watch out for these marketing claims

"Guaranteed funding" claims

No school, agent, or platform can guarantee you will receive grants or loans. Only StudentAid BC can make that decision after reviewing your complete application.

"Apply before July 31 for the maximum grant"

Grant amounts depend on financial need, program length, and eligibility, not on an arbitrary application date. Verify any deadline directly with StudentAid BC or your school's financial aid office.

Confusing loans with grants

Grants do not have to be repaid. Loans are interest-free while you study but must be repaid later. Some marketing posts combine both numbers into a single large figure.

School designation changes

A school that was designated last year may not be designated for 2026/27. Always check the current designated school list before enrolling.

How much can you receive?

Your Notice of Assessment will break the offer into two parts:

  • Grants: Money you do not repay. Amount depends on need, status, and program length.
  • Loans: Interest-free while you study, but must be repaid after you finish or leave school.

Some students see total offers of $30,000–$50,000 or more for a full year, especially when loans and grants are combined. Others receive less. The only reliable number is the one on your official Notice of Assessment.
